A poem my father wrote while in Boston a few years back visiting important sites of the American revolution. Enjoy and happy 4th. FREEDOM IS NOBLE A small group of farmers Who had children and wives Flanked the Old North Bridge And a dream came alive. They took powder and musket And gumption and grit And a strong yearn for freedom That just wouldn’t quit. There was something magic As they faced their fears That remains in our bloodstreams Two hundred plus years. It’s a hope for fairness And a spirit that calls For a land that is different And outshines them all. And the right to rebellion And to know that you can Are exactly the reason For which it began. And a mixture of cultures Black, white, yellow brown Has brought a uniqueness When you blend it all down. It’s been challenged by bigotry Injured by greed And the ugliness in that Has threatened its’ seed. But there’s truth in the matter As we stand here today Of a goodness still in it And not gone away. So centuries henceforth When America’s dust I hope there is one thing They remember of us. We chased an ideal That may never be done But a yearning for freedom IS a most noble one.
