A prayer for Ash Wednesday evening, March 5: Eternal God, you created each of us from earths dust and breathed into us the breath of life. We acknowledge that from dust we came, and to dust we shall return. May the ashes on our brows remind us of our mortality and our sin nature. But because you have been our dwelling place and satisfied us morning by morning with your steadfast love; we declare, on this sacred night, that you alone are worthy of all the praise. Lord, look upon us as we enter this season of Lent, and bless us as we acknowledge our need for repentance, mercy and forgiveness. Make our fasting a hunger for righteousness and justice. Help us, Great God, to set aside each and every weight that has so easily beset us and teach us wisdom in our inner parts and most of all, creat in us clean hearts and renew in us right spirits. We pray, O God, for this world on the brink of war. We pray for those peoples seeking relief from oppressive governments and unrelenting rulers. Bless this nation and those in authority. Forgive us, Lord, for always feeling the need to police the world. Remind us, dear God, that EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY BELONGS TO YOU. Bless your Church and may your will be done in the local church. Bless, O Lord, those who are sick, hungry, without shelter and those who are not sure of where their next meal will come. We lift up to you those who are bereaved, lonely and feeling as if you do not care. God of compassion, you have reconciled all of us to yourself, by the blood of Christ. Make them to know that they too, regardless of circumstances, are a part of your redemption. So help all of us, in the next weeks, to trust in you rather than our own faulty understanding. In Jesus name. Amen.
