A provincial lawmaker of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of Imran Khan was shot dead in northwestern Khyber Pakthunkhwa province on Monday, police and media reports said. Fareed Khan was shot near his home in Singair village in Hangu district, police said adding that his driver and bodyguard were also injured in the attack. Khan had won a seat in the Khyber Pakthunkhwa assembly in the May 11 general election as an independent candidate and he later joined the PTI, which has formed the government in the province. Police had no immediate clue about culprits and their motive and no militant organisation claimed responsibility immediately for the killing. “Khan and one of his friends died in the firing while their driver sustained serious injuries,” The unknown gunmen fled following the attack. Police spokesman Fazal Naeem confirmed the attack and casualties. PTI emerged as the largest party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the elections and will lead the new coalition government in the province, which has borne the brunt of Pakistan’s Taliban militancy in recent years. Hangu lies just a few kilometres from Pakistan’s lawless tribal regions, where militants linked to the Taliban and Al-Qaeda have carved out strongholds. Pakistani troops have for years been locked in deadly battles with domestic insurgents in the northwestern tribal belt, where militants also plot attacks on Afghan and Western targets. thenewstribe/2013/06/03/ptis-mpa-elect-fareed-khan-killed-in-hangu-attack/
