A rare and intriguing pairing: legends, the late, inimitable, American spinto tenor, Richard Tucker, and the great, astonishingly-still-with-us (at age soon-to-be {in just a few days} 93 or 97!), German dramatic soprano, Inge Borkh, in the thrilling final duet from Giordanos Andrea Chenier, Vicino a te. Conducted by the late Kurt Herbert Adler, I assume this clip is from the San Francisco Opera in one of their atypical castings -- for complete operas and gala concerts -- wherein the London Records/Decca stars would sing with the Columbia/CBS stars, Deutsche Grammophon stars with RCA stars, etc. (Yall who are collectors/followers of opera performances that took place in the mid-20th Century know what I mean.) Theyre both magnificent in this music--Tucker was a true vocal titan; Borkh, a brilliant, gleaming dramatic soprano with a true vocal individuality (and not often found in Italian music sung in Italian, other than her {very fine; recorded on Decca for posterity} Turandot). Thank you so much, Ed Rosen, for posting this!
