A reason to to doubt that US citizens are serious about reducing fossil fuel consumption: The Toyota Prius mid-size hatchback sedan has been available in the US for 10 years now, and has never sold 200,000 units in the US in a year. In fact, after peaking at 181,200 in 2007, annual sales have dropped to the 140,000-150,000 range. The total Prii sales are somewhat bolstered by the new family members, the Prius c, Prius v, and Prius plug in, but even with all Prii considered, they are currently only on pace to sell about 200,000 units in 2013. To put this in perspective, three conventional gas powered automobiles, including the gas guzzling Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado, have each already sold over 200,000 units in the first 6 months of 2013, with the Ford F-Series topping all automobiles sold so far this year at 367,500 units. What is worse, not only do the three top selling cars in America all use more gas, but they also cost more to buy and maintain than the Prius does, which means people are passing up the Prius even though it is cheaper both short term AND long term.
