A recap of all the buildings owned by Mutual of Omaha, with the last two being buildings they are pursuing the purchase of. As near as we can tell, they plan to demolish any building that currently stands on a parcel they own. We are not trying to claim that all of these buildings are architecturally or historically significant, because some of them - like the Little King building - certainly arent. But others are, and their demise would be a real loss for Midtowns rich historic character and diversity. If our city leaders dont prevent Mutual of Omaha from de-landmarking and demoing the Clarinda-Page, how can we be sure that any of these buildings will be safe? And as we revealed in our post on June 24th, with Mutual now moving their sites north to the Gifford Park neighborhood, the number of historic buildings at risk keeps on rising. Mutual of Omaha should be at the forefront of restoring Midtowns historic character, not the destroyer of a key factor that makes this area a place where people want to live.
