A recent comment here: Now for the kicker...as a firefighter the average life expectancy for me is 58 1/2... This is incorrect. Absolutely false. Here is a link CalPERS actual data - refer to page 35 of this CalPERS report: calpers.ca.gov/eip-docs/employer/retiree-ben-trust/experience-study.pdf You will see that the life expectancy of California firefighters is as follows: At age 50 - 80.5 At age 55 - 81.3 At age 60 - 82.0 At age 65 - 82.9 This compares to miscellaneous members whose average life expectancies are the following: At age 50 - 80.1 (0.4 lower) At age 55 - 81.1 (0.2 lower) At age 60 - 81.9 (0.1 lower) At age 65 - 83.0 (0.1 higher) The difference in life expectancy between firefighters and the general population is negligible. One should consider that good news.
