A regional power that generates so much unpleasantness cannot become a superpower, let alone be the global hegemon. What does China have to offer in place of the Western European values of democracy, equality, freedom, and human rights? The plight of our own domestic helpers in Hong Kong and the suffering of Tibetans alone are a frightening foretaste of a world dominated by China. Combine that with Chinas persistent use of force, rather than law, then one gets the idea that Chinas peaceful rise should be countered and contained as much as possible.
