A relatively small storm on Saturn was imaged beginning in the winter of 2010. Over the next eight months, Cassini was able to track the storm’s growth. It is very likely the storm has only recently ended. Storms on gas planets like Saturn are able to grow so large and rage on for so long because there are no hard surfaces like mountains or trees to disrupt the winds.
