A reporter for the WSJ commented that Christians put ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday to show their commitment to Christianity - not exactly! We put ashes on our foreheads to remind ourselves of our mortality, to remind ourselves that we are stardust reconstituted so humility is in order and to remember that we are fragile beings who make many, many mistakes on long, long road to becoming who we are. This is not to single out the WSJ - most of the reporters / journalists of our major media have very little understanding of religious symbols or way of life.
