A senior White House advisor claims that President Obama is considering his own version of the “nuclear option” on immigration. It would be an executive order, coming within a month, to prevent the deportation of up to 5 million people who came to America illegally or have overstayed their visas. The White House thinks this will help Democrats in November by boosting the Hispanic vote and rope-a-doping Republicans into trying to impeach Obama. But when there are protests against illegal immigration even in Massachusetts, I think they may be misreading the public mood. The argument that we need to legalize illegal immigrants to do the jobs Americans won’t do doesn’t hold water when there ARE no jobs Americans won’t do. I don’t believe most Americans are anti-immigrant. But we are pro-fairness and pro-rule of law. People don’t understand why Obama is seemingly rewarding those who come here illegally with benefits beyond those available to native-born citizens, legal immigrants and even veterans. And they see the influx of illegal immigrants as creating cut-rate competition for scarce jobs. Understandable, since a new study by the Russell Sage Foundation found that the inflation-adjusted net worth of the average American household has dropped by over a third since 2003. Black families have lost half their household wealth just since 2007. Americans also keep hearing that we need more immigrants because there aren’t enough Americans who can fill our STEM jobs: that’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. So the tech industry is pressuring Congress to hand out more green cards to foreign tech grads. But three independent researchers writing in USA Today report that there is no shortage of capable and willing American tech workers. In fact, they outnumber the available jobs by two or three to one. They just don’t work as cheaply as someone from India or China. Something to remember the next time a billionaire socialist from Silicon Valley lectures us on redistributing the wealth. Chances are, he considers his own wealth excluded.
