A silent motion picture called The Great Train Robbery was released by the Edison Manufacturing Company in 1903. By March of 1904 it was being shown at the Novelty Theatre. This theatre was located at 404 Butte Street in Redding, according to Jeremy M. Tuggle, our Archives Technical Assistant who wrote the article MANHUNT: The Search for the Elusive Gates Gang published in the 2015 Covered Wagon. The Gates Gang saw the movie at this location and planned their next great heist. They targeted Southern Pacific Train No. 15 at Copley (north of Redding), basing this heist off the classic silent motion picture. They killed the messenger on board the train. For those who are not familiar with the classic silent motion picture The Great Train Robbery here is a Youtube link to the full video: The local authorities saw many similarities between the film and heist. Purchase a copy of the 2015 Covered Wagon and read Tuggles article to learn more. Available at the Shasta Historical Society, the Enjoy Store, Crown Camera, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and Kent’s Meats & Groceries. https://youtube/watch?v=ZCWKh14Mvzg
