A silver VW station wagon, parked outside (right under a street - TopicsExpress

A silver VW station wagon, parked outside (right under a street lamp as it happens) 15 Plumer Road, was broken into last night around 11.15pm. The rear passenger window was shattered and the inside of the vehicle ransacked. Thanks to the quick reaction of Neels Visser L, who ran out and identified the purp as a young black male and then, fortuitously ran into a passing SAPS van as he gave chase around the corner into Dundonald Street, the cops were able to give chase and keep an eye out with subsequent patrols of the area. The suspect was later arrested around 3am as he broke into another vehicle in Fairview Road. The SAPS now have him in custody and Neels will have to give a statement to them once they have the thieving sods fingerprints. Whats most concerning about all of this is that, neither at the time of the break-in and car alarm going off, nor at Neels shouting and giving chase, nor at the cop car arriving with blue lights flashing and a siren on and off, conversations in the street with the cops, Neels walking up and down Plumer Road knocking on doors, nor at any other time later on right up until the cops returned at 12ish and again at 3am with their suspect - using their siren to again alert Neels that they were outside, DID A SINGLE OTHER RESIDENT OF THE ENTIRE AREA SO MUCH AS OPEN A WINDOW, NEVER MIND COME OUTSIDE TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON or GET INVOLVED! Nobody. Despite shouts, car alarms, knocking on doors, a police van with blue light flashing, a police siren being switched on and off, nobody else showed as much as a flicker of interest in what was going on in their street...... The complete lack of interest in what is happening around us is quite bizarre. The fact that nobody is prepared to get involved or, god forbid, come to the assistance of a neighbour and his/her property is quite terrifying and speaks volumes. We assume that the owners of the car who live at 15 Plumer Road are away. The car is still standing there exposed nearly nine hours later. But where was and are everybody else? The road is lined with motor vehicles and people have all come out this morning and walked passed unaffected. Could it be that we are immune to car alarms and house alarms? Or is it that we just dont give a damn? A BIG hats off to Neels for DOING something and putting his personal safety (and possibly, his life) in danger while he took on the bad guys. Thank YOU Neels, for actually giving a damn.
