A snapshot of the Brisbane Workshop held on 21 June 2013: Top 10 things to strengthen relationships: 1.Families face to face interviews with admin team on enrolment/buddy system. 2.Tours for potential parents/Class walkthrough on last Friday of the month before school 3.Parent/Teacher information night at beginning of year. 4.Class newsletter/School Newsletter/Parent information sessions 5.Arrange morning teas, welcome BBQs/Coffee with admin staff- twice a term 6.Invite families for school events - Harmony Day/ Showcasing student learning – Art show. 7.Front entry of the school being friendly and inviting/staff caring/answer phones promptly 8.Open door policy /Approachable, available leadership team and teachers. 9.Open body language/willingness to converse - more than meet and greet. 10.End of year afternoon tea/certificate/dinner for P&C, invite and celebrate. Top things that block engagement: 1.Decisions just being made by school staff – include parents, students and community; 2.Do not disturb or limited signs/perception of unfriendly teachers. 3.Community waiting in the Office area/ Children cluttering access to admin 4.Email overload/Not returning messages/follow up phone calls. 5.Putting barriers between parents and their child’s classroom community. 6.Not following up with parents after an injury incident. 7.Excluding some groups and individuals/creating divisions in school. 8.Not treating parents respectfully/Expecting parents to pocket out $$$. 9.Relying on only one method of communication/Assuming people know 10.Overscheduling the schools events calendar
