A snippet from the memoir Ive been working on this winter that might make people think twice about sitting on their ass in suburbia: Ive always told friends and family that the Tetons will never get old. Every time I see them, it is like the first time. Every step along the mountains, north or south, east or west, offers a view never seen before. There is always some refraction of light, too, or a lonesome pink cloud, or a rainbow, modifying the mystery--Altogether creating a new mystery. As the paramedic and I sped toward the ambulance three miles away, with the arctic wind glazing my beard into an unruly sculpture, I saw the Tetons for what felt like the first time. They stood taller than I had remembered, with the jagged granite spires reaching higher and dropping more precipitously than ever before. They were blanketed with a fresh layer of bright white snow, and I was as grateful for seeing them as I was the first time I saw them several years ago. I vividly remember thinking while I was on the sled that I was fortunate enough to see these mountains again, and that the moment on the snowmobile, was symbolic in some way, of my coming back to life and rushing towards the mountains--the mountains that had forever altered the scope of my life. As much as I was concerned, these Tetons were granite monuments to second chances...
