A society is judged by how it treats its most vulnerable members. A couple of nights ago, I saw a homeless man who had collapsed on a sidewalk. I called the police to get him to a shelter, knowing that, without that help, on a cold and rainy night, he might get sick and die. Or the woman I saw walking along the street for months, clearly mentally ill--and then one day I didnt see her again. Shes probably dead, or, if she is lucky, institutionalized for her own safety.
