A special Saturday.... I have lived in Moshi since 1986 when my parents moved back from Morogoro. I graduated as a law student in 2004 and became enrolled as an Advocate in December 2007. In 2010 as I was elected as a Ward Councillor for Mabogini by the people of Mabogini whom I have always respectfully hold as a family. But today its my first time ever to visit a prison, let alone Karanga Prison in Moshi where i have lived for more than 20 years. I have never been into one before. It is a special Saturday for me as a leader, lawyer and a son of Mabogini. I am visiting 6 remandees who are being held at the Karanga Prison for the death of a Maasai villager who was lynched and burnt to death after being suspected to steal goats in January 2013. It is a challenging position to me for one main reason, I am visiting friends and a mother (one elderly woman is among the suspects as it was her who cried for help on the fateful night) and at the same time I am a lawyer and a leader. Emotions and interests must be balanced against ethics and professionalism. It has been an experience that I will always remember. The realization that liberty is a right but can be by law be curtailed. As you freely wake up and go about your daily chores remember somewhere someone else is responding to a waking up bell (not an alarm clock); someone is sleeping at 15300hrs with lights on 24/7; someone is sleeping in a windowless cubicle; someone is talking to his daughter/son in the presence of a guard with a shotgun etc etc... It can happen to anyone...me and you arent immune! I feel relaxed after talking to the remandees. My promise is to make sure that justice prevails. Truth be told, no one is above the law and my duty is to make sure that the law is fairly and justly upheld. They will not be left to suffer in anguish as long as they are innocent. Innocent until proven guilty!! Happy weekend...
