A statement from the Guardian staff about the events of this week: We at the Bay Guardian were shocked and saddened by San Francisco Media Companys abrupt decision this week to immediately shut down our operations after 48 years. But weve been heartened and touched by the strong and widespread statements of support from our community. Particularly disturbing was the companys decision to take our SFBG website offline in the middle of a hotly contested election season, including our November election endorsements and the audio recordings of the candidate interviews on which they were based, as well as this weeks widely anticipated annual Best of the Bay issue. We want to thank progressive political leaders who helped persuade the company to restore the site, acknowledge SFMC for restoring access -- and call for SFMC to continue hosting this decades-long body of journalism and/or work with us on transferring it to a new host. We accept that its time for the Guardian to leave SFMC, even if were skeptical about the companys public claims that this decision was based strictly on the Guardians financial viability. We still believe the Bay Guardian is a vital, viable concern. We appreciate SFMC for keeping the Guardian and its journalists going these last couple years, and Publisher Glenn Zuehls assurances that he will sell the Guardian and its assets to a buyer who makes a reasonable offer to keep the Guardian alive. The Bay Guardian is more than just a newspaper and website, its an important community-based institution and essential watchdog of the powerful economic and political forces that are rapidly changing San Francisco. Please join the Guardian-in-Exile social media sites were creating as a hub for further discussions about where we go from here. We support the good work that our former editor Tim Redmond and his colleagues are doing at 48hillsonline.org and we urge our community to continue to support those who want to give voice to the pressing needs of the people and the planet. This is the central struggle of our times and we wont be deterred by this setback. The Guardian is dead, long live the Guardian.
