A story.... My friend, Elmo It was 1948, I was in the eighth grade and at the end of the year would graduate from this one room country school and go on to high school in a small town, Gruver Tx. about 20 miles away. Little did I know at the time I would marry, raise my own kids, and spend my life in this one horse town. 1948 was the year a new family moved into the community and three new kids came to school. There was three of them, a young girl, a little older boy, and Elmo the oldest. Elmo was the same age as I was and we were in the same grade. Elmo was a very likable guy but he had a streak of orneriness in him. He wasn’t mean, just had this thing about being an aggravation to the teacher and the kids at school. He would throw chalk and chalk board erasers, shoot paper wads with a rubber band, talk when asked to be quite. The teacher was a tall, large women and after awhile got tired of his meanness and started to paddle him from time to time. Ha, a no-no in this day and age. Elmo himself was a large boy, much bigger and stronger than I. He took his busting like a man, never shedding a tear. It seemed like he got them at least twice a week. Soon Elmo started to put a book down his pants to take away the sting of the board. The teacher let him get away with this from time to time and finally it got to the point where the teacher would tell Elmo to pull the book out his pants and then she would proceed to give him his busting. Elmo had a silly grin, and after every spanking he would have this silly grin, like saying “hell, that didn’t hurt”. We both went on and graduated that year and I never saw Elmo again. I heard one time that Elmo went to prison for stealing and selling farm machinery parts. Another time I heard that he was out of prison and had a trucking company. Wherever he is our whatever he did, I still remember my friend with the silly grin, Elmo.
