A string of major roads - including Corporation Street and St Peter’s Square - are already being dug up in the heart of Manchester, causing confusion and frustration for pedestrians, businesses and commuters alikeIt admits there will be ‘disruption’ but argues the results will ‘future-proof’ Manchester for half a century. The report comes as city leaders anticipate increasing levels of frustration among commuters, who have already been hit by considerable disruption in recent months. It began last year when work started to lay new Metrolink tramlines in St Peter’s Square, followed by Exchange Square, Cross Street and Corporation Street around Victoria Station - which is itself being upgraded. Ultimately those works will create the new ‘second city’ Metrolink crossing from Victoria to Deansgate. We reported last month how businesses around Cross Street have seen trade drop by up to 50pc since the works began. More disruption is expected when work around Piccadilly and Oxford Stations begins, as well as on Oxford Road.
