So, I have to tell you a story that I dont ever want to hear - TopicsExpress

So, I have to tell you a story that I dont ever want to hear again. Yesterday Dan was headed through Claremore and saw a man pull over and pull a trash bag from his trunk and throw it in a ditch. He called me telling me he was following the car to get the tag number and then going back for the bag. (suspecting live animals as a possibility) He caught up and got the tag number and headed quickly back to the bag. It held two dead young raccoons. The car soon returned, an elderly man, clearly upset, embarrassed and wanting to explain because he knew Dan had gotten his tag number, and he was afraid of going to jail. He wanted to explain. Mom raccoon had gotten ran over and the babies were breaking into the house. He didnt know what to do. His decision was to end their lives instead of letting them starve and go without care. He knew nothing about wildlife rehabilitation or that we even existed. What are the chances that it was one of our crew to see this? Slim to none is an overstatement. After giving the man a brochure, and explaining what could have been done for the babies had we been called, he felt terrible and his shame was paramount. However; I also share in the shame. This happened in my hometown. We need a non internet form of advertising, prominently displayed in town. Im going to work on this and want folks to know my motivation. Wild Heart began with two orphaned raccoons who had no place to go. Weve been here nearly 20 years and have avoided non internet advertising because of costs that dont directly benefit animals. Now I clearly see the need and I dont want these babies to have died in vain. This situation will haunt me until I feel Ive taken steps to prevent it, and welcome any local ideas or sponsorships. We cant complain if there is something we can do to change things, and dont. (Sometimes story time sucks. Sorry for that) Annette
