A strong cold front is moving through the state today. The front will come quickly through the State today with a temperature drop of at least 20 degrees behind this boundary. Also in the wake of the front will be strong northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts. Below the threat is broken down by the National Weather Service areas in the state of Louisiana. 1. FORECAST for LOUISIANA Southwest Louisiana: A modified arctic air mass will remain over the region into the weekend with the coldest period expected to Friday morning. Freezing temperatures are expected over most of the area Friday morning away from the coast. The National Weather Service in Lake Charles has issued a freeze watch which is in effect from Thursday evening through Friday morning. Temperatures expected to be 26 to 30 degrees north of Interstate 10 and 30 to 35 degrees south of Interstate 10. Impacts: tender outdoor vegetation will likely be damaged by subfreezing temperatures. Precautionary/preparedness actions: a freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are possible. These conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Southeast Louisiana: A strong cold front moved through the area this morning. Gusty north winds moving over the coastal waters are expected to make conditions more hazardous on the coastal waters tonight. Small craft advisory conditions are likely Thursday through early Friday for strong north winds in the wake of the cold frontal passage. Overnight low temperatures are expected to fall below freezing on Friday morning, especially over southern Mississippi away from the immediate coastline as well as portions of southeast Louisiana and northwest of a line near Morgan city to Lake Maurepas to Slidell. A freeze watch will be in effect for these areas Thursday night and Friday morning. Much of the same area is likely to see temperatures below freezing Saturday morning as well. North and Central Louisiana: In the wake of the front will be strong northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts. As a result, a Lake Wind Advisory has been posted for all of the Four State Region except the southern and eastern third of Northern Louisiana. Clouds are expected to clear from northwest to southeast and with mostly clear skies expected tonight. Freezing temperatures are expected. The cold temperatures will hang around through the upcoming weekend with the coldest night likely occurring Thursday Night/Friday Morning where widespread freezing temperatures are likely. An upper level disturbance will move into the region this weekend bringing with it increasing chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms. At this time it appears that any precipitation that falls will be of the liquid variety but this will continue to be closely monitored as the event unfolds.
