A strong tectonic in origin earthquake hits VISAYAS REGION, SOUTHERN LUZON and NORTHERN MINDANAO around 8:12 AM. THE EPICENTER IS CARMEN, BOHOL. M 7.2 Earthquake 5km E of Balilihan, Philippines Depth 56.8 km (35.5 MILES) TAGBILARAN - 7 Magnitude BACOLOD - 4 Magnitude HINIGARAN - 6 Magnitude LA CARLOTA - 4 Magnitude ILOILO - 5 Magnitude ROXAS CITY - 4 Magnitude SAN JOSE, ANTIQUE - 4 Magnitude Masbate - 4 Magnitude Butuan - 4 Magnitude Surigao - 3 Magnitude Davao City - 3 Magnitude The following areas - Iloilo, Bohol, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Misamis Oriental experienced series of aftershocks, power blackout and communication problems. Five deaths were confirmed in Cebu: four (4) in the public market of Barangay Pasil, Cebu after a stall (tapangko) collapsed and hit them and one (1) in Mandaue after being hit of the debris inside the public market. Old churches of PARDO, ARGAO, and tower of the Basilica of Sto. Nino were reported to have been severely damaged.In Bohol, the 400 year-old stone church in Loboc was severely damaged. Its roof collapsed after being hit by 7.2 magnitude earthquake. In Tagbilaran City, there were no initial reports of damage. In Carmen which is 50 kilometers from the capital, there were no confirmed human casualties except for initial report of a church building which was damaged. Several aftershocks were felt as of the moment. No electricity and communication (landline) in Carmen for now. Roads were closed due to cracks. TSUNAMI ALERT in Visayas area has been raised. Expect aftershocks. These secondary shockwaves are usually less violent than the main quake but can be strong enough to do additional damage to weakened structures and can occur in the first hours, days, weeks, or even months after the quake. Look for and extinguish small fires. Fire is the most common hazard after an earthquake. Be aware of possible tsunamis if you live in coastal areas. These are also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called tidal waves). When local authorities issue a tsunami warning, assume that a series of dangerous waves is on the way. Stay away from the beach.
