Here is the account of Captain William H. Burgwyn, the younger brother of Colonel Henry K. Burgwyn Jr., who led the 26th North Carolina into the first days fighting, in which he was mortally wounded. His family remained ignorant of their loss until the first news reached them July 12, as is reflected in Williams diary entries that focus on the almost mundane everyday life near Richmond before he first hears rumors of Harrys death.
