A study being done by The University College Cork is examining whether treating subclinical hypothyroidism, previously implicated in heart attacks and strokes, has an effect on health outcomes. Patricia Kearney, research professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, University College Cork, has been leading a team of eight researchers for the Irish element of the project. This project has the potential to improve the health and well-being of our elderly by determining whether treating subclinical hypothyroidism is beneficial, she explains. The trial participants are being contacted through their GPs. We hope to find out whether treating them with Thyroxine prevents heart disease and stroke and improves quality of life, she explains. ThyroidChange will be eagerly awaiting the results of this trial. We applaud those researchers who are setting out to find the truth about subclinical hypothyroidism.
