A suburban cautionary tale. Once upon a time there was a little family living in a nice little town in Connecticut. They worked hard and saved money to send their beloved daughter to college. They werent able to do a lot of work on their little house because, well, college costs a shitload of money. So does retirement. However, they saved a little more and thought: lets replace our crappy windows with new ones that arent painted shut and dont have to be propped up with curtain rods and random pieces of wood. So they got several estimates from contractors and chose some nice, not too cheap windows, and looked forward to the day when the new windows would shine brightly. One day, before the windows came, the husband was in the yard doing some yard work and a neighbor strolled by. Conversation ensued about window project. I certainly hope youre not getting those [vulgar vinyl] windows! Theyre so not appropriate in this neighborhood And of course, this hard-working couple was purchasing said vulgar vinyl windows. Oh my. Why, yes, we are! said the husband. Wed be happy to purchase the nicer, more appropriate wood windows, if a) youd like to pay for them; and b) youd like to come repaint them every three years. Ha ha ha, they both laughed, while ignoring the major faux pas that had just transpired. Moral to story: People who live in expensive, redecorated, remodeled gigantic Colonial homes should not disparage people who have slightly different priorities and values and cant afford expensive windows. And everyone lived happily ever after.
