PEOPLE IN HIGH PLACES: PART 2 “The Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear-guard” Isaiah 52:12 While Pastor Russ Thomas was working in the Middle East, he wanted to see the king of Saudi Arabia. But that was not so easy. He had to work through the secretary, who was trying his best to block the way. But the Lord has a way of opening doors and closing doors, as faithful literature evangelists know too well. Russ tells the story. “One of the ‘highways’ we wanted to travel in the Middle East was to meet the king of Saudi Arabia. His private secretary, however, refused to let us have the interview we requested. I asked him, ‘Where did you learn to speak such beautiful English?’ His dark eyes sparkled. ‘I have a degree from the University of Nebraska,’ he replied. ‘Let us shake hands,’ I said; I have just returned from there. My last five years were in Lincoln, Nebraska.’ “ They were still talking when police cars and motorcycles arrived. Russ and his companion stood with excitement. The king was arriving! The secretary came straight to them and ordered them to follow him. On this visitors’ day the king went into a large room where guests take their turns for a quick interview with him. The two literature evangelists were not invited only into the room, but they were given seats, one on the left and the other on the right hand of the king. Soon they were each handed a small cup of herb tea – a symbol of saying “You are welcome. Peace to you. You have had tea with the king.” The king smiled, and Russ returned the king’s smile as they drank tea together. Now it was time for business, and Russ started by saying, “Your honour, King Khalid, the Home Health and Education Service has some of the most important books in the world. We wish to share them with the people of your country.” After a few pleasantries, the king replied, “Your books are welcome.” The king stood up and shook hands with them. The interview was over. Before they left the room, they each were presented with an autographed picture of the king. The rest of the story we don’t know as yet. Further negotiations with the Minister of Information had to be done. But this was most probably the beginning of an open door for God’s truth-filled books to get into Saudi Arabia. Many of the wealthy people of this country visit Alexandria and Cairo for their vacations. Egyptian literature evangelists sell our books to these vacationers, who take them back to their homeland. One day the lamps will go on like streams of light all over those lands. Today we pray for all those countries that are still closed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pray for more doors to open and more light to enter into these spiritually dark lands where the truth of God is still not known. The light is penetrating in some ways, but your prayers are needed.
