A three a.m. post. Ive been thinking about the many articles we read on this page --- about writing, rules for writing, editors, reviews, publishing, indie publishing etc. And it seems to me one problem every fiction author today faces is that ALL kinds of fiction writing are lumped together in our discussions. We dont make distinctions between literary fiction for example and popular fiction, gothic, romance, and horror fiction on the one hand and pedestrian realism on the other, and we dont discuss much the difference between those who want to change the world through their books and those who simply want to entertain. Maybe thats why I find myself saying so often there are no rules that apply to all of us. Maybe thats why I get so confused when people make generalizations about editing, or try to explain to me how they think authors should behave, or feel, or respond to reviews, et al. Its always been this way, it seems. What do you think? Are you sometimes confused when a novel you cherish by a favorite author is referred to casually as pulp fiction by somebody else, or you go into a bookstore looking for something poetic and beautiful by a new writer but dont know where to begin to find it amid genres and general fiction and literature and the like? Thoughts welcome.
