A true gentleman who was capable of change - especially at the Watergate Hearings, where he started out defending Richard Nixon and ended up becoming a powerful critic. That may have been a wise political move at the time, but I dont think his move was just about politics. I think that his mind actually changed the more he learned about what Nixon had done. That sounds like such a simple thing - changing ones mind to fit the facts - but I dont think it happens much in Washington these days. Anyway, I met him in Tokyo when he was US Ambassador there and I told him that Id really admired his work on the Watergate Committee. He said, Oh, youre far too young to remember that, which showed that he was still a politician at heart - but a nice one.
