A typical day in third grade- Mrs. Baumgardner (or is it Baumgarden? I cant recall) gave us an assignment to make artwork for the classrooms bulletin board. Leo Nepa and I went to work on drawing an apple tree. We perfected a sponge painting technique for creating foliage. Not to be outdone, Leo Kostelnik (and I think Jim Colizzo)competed with us by using tissue paper. (Imagine there were two Leos in one class) In the mean time, Kirsten Browse and Cheryl DeJong walked around pretending to be British royalty, while Ann Bosi, never quite perfecting the accent, tried her best to make it a trio. Of course, all the girls had cooties at the time, but a few, like Michele Smith and Debby Sandman, were already breaking down those barriers. And Art Erb, a true pioneer in the art of cootie breaking rules, flirted regularly with Elaine Rispoli. After lunch, we got together on the playground. We were still a segregated society--girls on one side, boys on the other. We played tackle football(Little supervision. No pads or rules) I was the go to guy at that point. Affectionately known as Tank, I weighed twice as much as most kids my age, and it took seven people to tackle me. (Cool back then, but not something to brag about when youre 48) The school day ends and I ride good old bus number two home, sitting next to Steven Burd. A long trek, (40 minutes) we were introduced to Kiss records and passages from Judy Blume novels along the way. The lengthy ride didnt deter us from heading up to Andover park for whatever ball game was in season. The usual characters showed up. Dave Hendershott, Lonnie Hawk, Andre Schwartz, Graig Walters, my brother Dave, ect. (I hope Im spelling all these names correctly) We played until either someone got hurt and ran home crying, or until our mother called us for dinner. Yep,those were the days!
