...A typical statement Ive heard from many people is: I want something so badly that Im afraid I wont get it. I pray for it all the time but I know God wont give it to me. So as much as I keep praying, deep down inside, I know it wont happen. Um, okay, reality check. Why would God give you what youre asking for when WHILE youre begging Him for it, youre thinking, Hes never going to answer my prayer. He wont give me what I want just because I want it. How selfish is that?! How messed up is that?! Think about someone you know asking you to use your phone for a minute. And you know this person really well, you trust them, you know how much they just need to use your phone, and you wont be charged extra for the call they make. Its not even a problem for you. Super easy request. Would you let them use your cell? Likely yes. But then, what if they asked you and followed it up with, Psh. I know you wont let me use your phone. Even though you know how much I want this. You would never let me have what I want. Wouldnt that response throw you off? Doesnt that just sound like a pathetic, whiny child who really doesnt know you and seriously has trust issues and problematic insecurities theyve unnecessarily projected unto you? And to God is the highest example! God didnt create you to punish you by withholding everything you want from you! Yes, sometimes we dont get what we want. But its always because, When He removes something in your possession it is only in order to empty your hands for an even greater gift! (Ibnul Qayyim) He says, I am as my servant thinks I am. If you think Hell give, give, give, He will! But not just what you ask for- MORE than what you ask for. BETTER than what you ask for. And in His wisdom, He sometimes protects you from what you ask for. But you also have to do your part. Remember these 3 things when you ask God for something: 1- Have CERTAINTY from the depths of your heart and soul that when you ask, He is listening and He will answer. The Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him) said: “Ask God when you are sure of His response... 2- Remember that He will never let your hands drop down empty: Your Lord is most shy and most generous! He is so shy that He does not send His servants supplications back without answering them when His servant raises his hands on supplicating Him. 3- Be present in your duaa. As the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught, ...and remember that God does not accept the dua of the unmindful and neglectful heart. So that whole putting your hands up for 2 seconds after prayer, mumbling something and not even knowing what the heck you just said- replace that with a heartfelt prayer that will actually mean something not only to you- but also to Him. Life is hard and with it comes painful struggles. But you never have to do it alone. He is always there and will always respond. Have positive thoughts about Him and expect the best from Him. He is capable of answering the yearnings of your heart. But in ways which are filled with His Divine wisdom and that are specially designed just to make your life that much better.
