A very distinguished clergyman had a son, handsome and gifted, but who, following his father into the ministry, brought reproach to the cause of Christ and immeasurable anguish to his father. The son was deposed from the ministry. Years afterward, the father appeared before the synod of the church and pleaded with his brethren to restore the son to holy office. Those who were present described the scene as the most moving and dramatic they had witnessed. The theologian, the wise counsellor, the man who thought for the church, the guardian of the honour of the cause – all these were gone, or forgotten for the moment, and only the father stood there pleading for his beloved son. A man’s love for his son, or a mother’s love for her children, is at best a fickle reflection of God’s love for mankind. Compelled by this love, He abandoned the lofty heights of His throne, donned the form of a man, and came down to earth to plead our case. Love knows no bounds. It goes to great extents, even sacrificing its dignity, to bring relief to the object of its affection. Thus is the Father’s love for us, and thus does He expect us to love our neighbours in return. The Good Samaritan, prompted by love, put his honour, wealth, and life at risk to save a man he did not know. Love intervenes, even at the cost of its own convenience. To intercede or to intervene is to come in-between a person and distress, putting one’s honour, integrity, privileges and sometimes, substance, on the line. Life consistently presents us unique opportunities to carry out this noble demand of love. We can start today by humbling ourselves before God in intercession for others; by reaching out to them with the good news of salvation, no matter how lowly they are and how dignified our status. We can start by lending a helping hand to others in the everyday details of life. God’s love compelled Him to intervene on our behalf. This love has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost (Romans 5:5), and God expects us to reach out to others. Let the force of love propel you today, and always, in Jesus’ name. - Pastor Taiwo
