Here, they adopted the Declaration of Belém which amongst others outlines the responsibilities of scientists and environmentalists in addressing the needs of local communities by engaging indigenous experts in initiatives that affect them, their resources, and their environments. Today, the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE) continues its efforts in providing a platform for a meaningful and respectful dialogue among people of diverse views, cultures and backgrounds. Cross-cultural sharing of ideas, issues and solutions across Indigenous and non-Indigenous, academic and non-academic, and theoretical and practical perspectives is a vital part of this dialogue that is held every two years in varying parts of the world. Inspired by the ISE’s effort, which is inline with vision of the Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment (UWICE) under the Department of Forests and Park Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Forests, UWICE in partnership with the International Society of Ethnobiology (ISE), will be hosting the 14th World Ethnobiology Congress at Lamai Gompa, Bumthang, Bhutan from 1 – 7th June 2014. The 14th ISE Congress will bring together indigenous and non-indigenous participants from around the world to tackle the key issues of our times. Our interest to organize this congress is to support and promote the critical efforts of indigenous peoples, traditional societies, and local communities in the conservation of biological, cultural and linguistic diversity, which of-course has been the priority since the International Society of Ethnobiology’s (ISE) inception. There will be a wide range of formats for people to share their knowledge, ideas and experiences, ranging from talking circles, to film viewings and discussions, cultural performances, field trips, oral presentations and poster sessions. About 230 oral presentations, 80 poster presentation and 14 documentaries shall be screened apart from the bio-cultural festival which is scheduled to be held during the last two days of the congress session. 390 international participants from 55 countries have registered to participate in the congress. The theme of the 14th World Ethno-biology congress is “Chi Nor Zom Bu Ling: Regenerating bio-cultural ecosystem resilience and transmission of traditional knowledge”.
