A weirdly surreal thing is happening in Australian politics. The polls all point to an imminent Tony Abbott victory, in the face of his LIFELONG personal and professional track record of callous, bullying, parsimonious, bigoted, mendacious and just plain nasty behaviour and attitudes (references available on request). Day after day, the evidence of his evil deeds, past and present, mounts in the quality news media and ABC discussion forums, yet the bulk of the soon-to-be voting public sails on, obliviously swallowing the anti-Labor line as peddled with breathtaking brazenness by the Murdoch press, and will very soon “democratically” elect this viper to The Lodge. “Democratically” gets quote marks because from where I’m sitting (this is the surreal bit), the whole thing has come to resemble nothing less than a kind of slow-motion, invisible-in-plain-sight COUP by the populist/right-wing media, happening right before our dismayed but helpless eyes. Or maybe I’m wrong. Maybe the public will suddenly realize it actually doesn’t worship political thugs and bullies – sorry, I mean Strong Leaders – and will cast a vote for collective moral sanity. Or maybe, once he’s gained the power he’s salivated over all his life, Tony will turn out to be a pussycat. And squadrons of winged pigs will stage a flypast over Canberra.
