A well educated female friend of mine (Lainie Butler) is incensed - TopicsExpress

A well educated female friend of mine (Lainie Butler) is incensed (rightly) at the injustices of our society especially regarding gender discrimination. Her points are salient (understatement). She says, It is ASTRONOMICALLY more expensive living as a woman, but we get paid less and therefore have less SSA benefits and less money to earn interest on. Then men expect you to sleep with them because they spent $20 for dinner .... She points out that women spend large amounts of money on clothing, cosmetics and other things that men might consider frivolous, but which in fact are necessary in our society for a woman to hold a job, to get and keep a good relationship (whether married or not), and to be respected. Some men wont even shave for a date. She goes on to say, I find it completely insulting and disrespectful for men to expect so much in return for so little. Especially later in life women feel a significant amount of societal pressure to maintain appearances that men dont feel. Cosmetic surgery is common, and very expensive. Again, men often feel that this is frivolous, and of course insurance doesnt pay for it, but the pressure it there and its real. Without paying attention to these kinds of frivolous things women often suffer even greater discrimination than they otherwise face. And we all know that PRIOR to the Affordable Care Act womens health insurance was significantly more expensive than mens health insurance even while cosmetic surgery is not included. BUT of course the Republicans in the Senate filibustered the Equal Pay For Women Act ostensibly because theres enough legal protection in the laws already. But if thats true then why in 2013 were women who were working full time jobs paid on an average only 78 cents compared to every dollar earned by men working full time? Even comparing the exact same jobs with the same seniority, women earn somewhere between 1% and 4% less than men by one survey. Thats not the half of it. New research from Wells Fargo shows that college-educated millennial men made $20,000 more per year than women with the same education level. The median annual income for millennial men was $83,000, while women made only $63,000. I thought women were supposed to be gaining parity. Doesnt look like it to me. Do Republicans care?
