A wise man once said: If we decide to be completely lawabiding - TopicsExpress

A wise man once said: If we decide to be completely lawabiding citizens and never violate the law, that in itself is a moral decision, and we have to take responsibility for that decision, even when the law is doing evil things. Its certainly easy enough to see in extreme cases—such as those that faced citizens of Nazi Germany and still face people in Communist Russia—that disobedience to the civil law can be obedience to a much higher, moral, law. A few people have always had to stick their necks out and take a chance on getting their heads chopped off on these moral questions. Human slavery in the U.S., for example, was always supported by the majority . . . or at least accepted by a majority. Abolitionism began as a minority movement, and the abolitionists often resorted to illegal measures. Most of us today would say that those people were morally justified in what they did, even though it was illegal at the time. So strict legality isnt always a very good standard by which to judge right and wrong. EA
