A woman remains under police guard in hospital after the armed robbery of one shop and the attempted armed robbery of another in Newtown. It’s alleged about 7.30pm yesterday (Saturday 7 June 2014), a 38-year-old woman entered a dry cleaners shop on King Street armed with a knife. Police have been told she threatened staff and demanded cash, leaving a short time later empty-handed. She then entered a nearby convenience store, also on King Street, and threatened staff with the weapon. This time she made off with an amount of cash. Police from Newtown Local Area Command attended and chased the woman down Alice Street. It’s alleged that when police caught up with her, she refused to drop the knife and lunged towards two of the officers. As a result, police deployed a taser, and she was disarmed and arrested without further incident. The 38-year-old woman was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment. Upon her release, the woman will be taken to Newtown Police Station where she will be charged.
