“A word in earnest is as good as a speech.” ― Charles Dickens, BLEAK HOUSE College for Seniors - Fall 2013 Course Preview Understanding Charles Dickens’ BLEAK HOUSE Many critics consider BLEAK HOUSE to be Charles Dickens’ finest novel, but it is not an easy read. Together we will explore the context of the courts, money and property, social class, the novel’s settings, the roles of women, the professions explored. We will also explore Dickens’ biography and his unique artistry. While the course will have a strong lecture component, our primary purpose will be to read and discuss this fascinating depiction of Victorian life. Required text: BLEAK HOUSE (Penguin Classics), Charles Dickens, ISBN-13: 978-0141439723. Catherine Frank holds a PhD in English from UNC Chapel Hill. At OLLI at Duke University, she taught courses in Victorian literature and memoir writing and also served as the director. She is currently the director for OLLI at UNC Asheville.
