A world I no longer recognize. Yesterday a friend and I spent 4 hours in Wicker Park trying to encourage passerbys to sign a petition to put a mayoral candidate on the ballot. We choose the area because on a sunny Saturday, we thought it would be rife with younger people out and about and it was territory that was likely to be unfamiliar with the candidate. I have never seen such horrid people in my life. Such contempt for electoral politics or such entitled class behavior. Really startling - these folks could really care less about anything else other than their purchases and leisure pleasures. I only post this because after watching the results of several elections and the low turnout numbers, I see this is an area we have to grapple with. I am no shrinking violet but to tell you the truth i found myself finally yelling at one yuppie chick in cashmere, I hope you lose your job and all your safety nets and are out in the street with the rest of us- to which she replied, you are hurting your cause. My cause? my...cause? Really, hmmmm.
