A year ago today I was in hospital waiting for an operation to remove a rare cancer that takes on average 5-7 years of misdisgnosis before it is found and treated. Mine was ignored by several doctors, nurses and consultants for over two years - my partially collapsed lung was brushed off as asthma. My charitable giving this year is going to netpatientfoundation.org who, along with funding clinical research into palliative and curative treatments, publish resources for GPs and campaign to improve recognition of the distinctive symptoms of NET cancers by medical professionals so more sufferers can be diagnosed and receive treatment sooner, saving lives and improving quality of life. If you do/did participate in the ice bucket challenge please think about where your money is going. The US ALS charity that started it blows 50% of its income on wages with lots of executives on six figure salaries and has no idea what to do with the sudden windfall. Dont let your usual charities take a hit because of this (admittedly genius) campaign idea.
