A young lady was so afraid to go to school. She would leave the house like she was going to school but would never get there. At the end of the day she would return home like she had been in school all day. Then one day her mum got news from the school that her child had been absent for 2 weeks and they hoped she was not sick. The mother hearing this was furious. She called her daughter and demanded for a reason why she was bunking off school. The mother was even more worried that she had mixed with the wrong set and was probably sleeping around. After much interrogation, the young lady told her mum that one girl in her class used to bully her. What?? Bully? Your mate who is going to school like you bullying you? Mama said Oya lets go there. From today henceforth you shall never be bullied as long as im alive. She marched her daughter into the school premises and walked her daughter to her classroom. They were having a lesson at the time when the mum barged in Who be the person wey say my pikin no go become somebody for this life? The daughter pointed to the bully and the mother asked her to step outside for a showdown. There was uproar in the school and the teacher ran to get the headmistress. Before they got to the scene the girl on her mothers instruction had beaten the bully to the ground. She never knew she had the fight in her till she was pushed to it. When the headmistress arrived and demanded an explanation the mother said I am a single mother who lost her husband in the war, leaving me with 4 children to raise on my own, I work hard to make sure my children get the best in life that I didnt have, then one silly child lacking home training will deprive me of my reward by bullying my daughter - NEVER!! After much talking, both ladies were suspended from school for 2 weeks, but never again did anyone dare to bully her. As my mum narrated this story I had much respect for my grandma (rest in peace). She was a no nonsense woman and life had dealt her a bad blow, but she never dwelt or wallowed in self pity. She believed that everyone had a right to fair play no matter what hand life has dealt to you and she will tell you that everyone has enough fight in them to breakthrough and get to the next level. I never knew my mum as a fighter at least not physically, neither did I ever see her go out of her way to start a fight but I could see her drive and determination to make an impact on us. Her determination to see her kids get the best in life. Impacting knowledge, value and virtue to us all. And if I have learnt anything from her it is this - Never hand over the remote control of your life to ANYONE. Be it your husband, your child, the bully in your class or your boss at work who wants to take advantage...etc. You own your life and you decide how you want to run it.
