ABSTRACT Development versus Environment: A Resolution to Stop - TopicsExpress

ABSTRACT Development versus Environment: A Resolution to Stop Development at the Cost of Environment Climate change mitigation is an action to restrict the magnitude or pace of long-term climate change. It generally involves reductions in human emissions of green house gases (GHGs). Mitigation may also be achieved by increasing and conserving the capacity of carbon sinks. Thus, we can achieve this by sustainable development. The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD), also known as Rio 2012, Rio+20 or Earth Summit 2012 was the third international conference on sustainable development. It aimed at unification of the economic and environmental goals of the globe. The summit concluded with the nonbinding document, The Future We Want, the heads of state of the 192 governments in attendance renewed their political commitment to sustainable development and declared to promote a sustainable future. The document largely reaffirms previous action plans like Agenda 21. It includes the development of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To overcome past failures, the conference had three objectives: 1. Securing renewed political commitment for sustainable development 2. Assessing the progress and implementation gaps in meeting previous commitments. 3. Addressing new and emerging challenges. Only 3 developing countries are listed in the top 10 carbon consuming nations. Thus, in order to achieve sustainable development the international relations need to be strengthened and self accountability shall be maintained. The developed countries shall take suo-motto responsibility in achieving the set objectives and help developing nations in achieving the same.
