carbo load before your big race: "The prerace pasta dinner is a tradition among endurance runners because it increases energy stores, helping you go the distance. Now it turns out carbo-loading may result in a quicker finish too, according to a new study from the University of Minnesota. Athletes who ate an additional half gram of the nutrient per pound of body weight during the 24 hours preceding a marathon shaved an average of 5 minutes off their time. To feed for speed, have an extra serving of high-carb food-like two slices of whole-wheat bread or a cup of brown rice-at every meal the day before a race."-SHAPE magazine July/August 2013 pg.77
