AC Milan have announced that will stand by club president Silvio Berlusconi following the decision of Italy’s supreme court to uphold the criminal conviction against the 76-year-old. The conviction for tax fraud carries a four-year prison sentence and marks the first time the Milan owner has been definitely convicted after numerous trials, although it is likely the tycoon will face house arrest or community service rather than prison time due to his age. An angry Berlusconi claimed in a video response that the conviction was the result of a judicial conspiracy against him. On the club’s official website, the Rossoneri unequivocally promised to stand by their president in spite of the legal problems facing the ex-Prime Minister as the conviction brought politics into the world of football. “For 27 years the life of the Milanisti has been worth living and talking about—thanks and only thanks to Silvio Berlusconi,” said the club in a press release. “Today as always, now more than ever: the Milanisti are on the side of president Berlusconi. “How many times has he given a boost to the thing he loves most? This time if needed it will be Milan and the Milanisti who will repay him. “So today above all else, Forza Presidente!”
