ACT NOW TO PROTECT YOUR GROUNDWATER - 170 local students, WRD & US EPA pledge to protect local groundwater September 9, 2014 - The Water Replenishment District (WRD), in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and 170 students from Hooper Elementary School in Los Angeles, celebrated “Protect Your Groundwater Day”. This annual day, founded by the National Ground Water Association (NGWA), is observed nationwide in an effort to increase public awareness of the importance of groundwater. One-hundred seventy second grade students and local officials took the A.C.T. Pledge to: Acknowledge, Consider and Take Action, to conserve and protect local groundwater supplies from contamination, which is especially crucial during the State’s most historic drought. “Community members in our service area are dedicated to water conservation, which helps to maintain healthy groundwater basins” said WRD Board Secretary Willard H. Murray, Jr. “WRD is educating the next generation of groundwater champions through its educational programs and special events, like Protect Your Groundwater Day.” “California’s groundwater provides about 30 percent of the state’s total water supply,” said John Kemmerer, Associate Director of the Water Division, EPA Region 9. “These young students are a great example of how individuals can do their part to conserve water and protect this vital resource.” “Every person can do something to protect local groundwater -from not polluting to using it wisely,” said NGWA Public Awareness Director Cliff Treyens. “We each have a personal responsibility to protect groundwater. The good news is that for most people all it takes is a small adjustment in their daily lives.” On January 17 Governor Brown declared a drought state of emergency. Water supplies remain far below normal despite recent rain and snowfall. If everyone does their part to protect and conserve water in their daily lives, we can save millions of gallons of pure water that are now wasted. The cheapest source of new water is the water saved by using what we already have more wisely.
