ACTION-AID BOMBALI BOOSTS 1,223 CHILDREN By Sahr J.Bangah As part of its strive to cater for the vulnerable children in Bombali District, Action-Aid Bombali through its partners, WOFHARAD and GEM has provided food and learning materials for 1,223 children in district. The NGO also provided medical preventive gears for six PHUs in Bombali Sebora, Magbaimba Ndowahun, Sella Limba Chiefdoms all in the Bombali District. Explaining the rationale behind the donation at Makump Village in the Bombali Sebora Chiefdom, Action-Aid Acting Regional Manager, Mohamed Sankoh stated that Action Aid is an International Non-Governmental Organization working in seven Districts in Sierra Leone under the Local Rights Programme with the vision “a world without poverty and injustice in which every person enjoys their right to life or dignity”. He revealed that the donation came as a result of Action-Aid intervention in complementing government’s effort in the fight against Ebola epidemic in country, informing that Action Aid main source of funding is through a scheme known as Child Sponsorship, which provides the space where a child acts as ambassador for Action-Aid International Sierra Leone. He reiterated that Action-Aid is not supporting a child directly but rather the entire community on their felt needs but today Ebola Virus disease has forced Action-Aid to bend down a bit their policy to give direct support to Children, noting that this new approach is only for emergency response to Ebola. He concluded that Action-Aid and its partners are adhering to the clarion call of the President in the fights against Ebola Virus which should be a collective fight and because of this reason, Action-Aid has supported all the District Health Management Teams in the country including the Western Area with Food, None food items and fuel. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Bombali District, the Deputy Director of Education, Haja Ramatu Kanu thanked Action-Aid Bombali for their frantic efforts in promoting education in that part of the District. She added that the Ministry of Education in Bombali District is proud to work with Action Aid staff members because they are transparent and accountable to their beneficiary by rendering quality service in all their operational areas and therefore called on parents to make use of the donation for the benefit of their children. Madam Haja Ramatu Kanu further revealed that Action-Aid is the leading Non-Governmental Organization in the Bombali District especially in the area of education and on that note, commended the leadership of the institution and urged other Non-Governmental Organizations to follow the good example of Action Aid. On behalf of the District Health Management Team, Mrs. Frances Fornah lauded Action Aid for boosting the activities of the PHUs and the Ministry of Education, noting that the donation is timely. Ismail Kabbay, Bombali District Command Centre Manager said that Ebola is real but can be prevented through the ‘Avoid Body Contact’ in addition to accepting and practicing by-laws at Chiefdom level, emphasizing that collective participation approach is paramount in the fight against Ebola. Delivering his key note address on behalf of the Action Aid Country Director, Aruna Kamara, Action-Aid Communication Director said that Action Aid is undergoing a solidarity moment and hard moment recalling that at the initial stage, the institution embarked on Ebola sensitization as a way of keeping the rules and also donated food and none food items to all District Health Management Teams (DHMTs). He pointed out the essential food items donated to the sponsorship Children is to build up their immune system and concentrate towards their education.
