On the VNC agenda tonight asks the board to sent a letter to the Mayor and Counc member Bonin to open the winter shelter at least one month earlier than the scheduled Dec. 1 date. There is no reason why unhoused people cant be offered the opportunity to sleep on a bed, get fed and a shower before the cold weather hits. Request for the Early Opening of West Side Winter Shelter at the West LA National Guard Armory (Linda Lucks and Brad Neal, [email protected] and bradnealvenice@gmail) (5 minutes) MOTION: WHEREAS homeless people and housed residents of Venice Beach need immediate relief and, WHEREAS opening the Winter Shelter National Guard Armory earlier than planned is a humane response to the large numbers of unhoused people in the area and, WHEREAS recent precedent exists to open the armory early, as was done in 2012 when Councilman Rosendahl ($20,000) and Mayor Villaraigosa ($90,000) located $110,000 for six additional weeks of operation in the midst of a budget crisis THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the VNC Board recommends that Councilman Mike Bonin in partnership with Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, open the Westside Winter Shelter on or before November 1, 2014, prior to the annually scheduled Dec.1 opening date. The VNC also recommends seeking funds to extend the closing date past the March 1, 2015 regularly scheduled closing date, particularly as the weather is quite cold all through March.
