ADA is 10 Years Old! A Letter from Ana De Archuleta “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. Youre on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one wholl decide where to go...” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, The Places Youll Go! It feels like yesterday that I started this adventure – and it seems like a lifetime ago! This newsletter is the celebration of 10 years work. Ten years of exciting debuts, of new and innovative productions and programming, of challenges met and overcome. And while it is a celebration of ADA, it is also a celebration of this art form, and the drive of all who lend their whole self to its existence – for we are truly privileged to work with each and every of one you to that end. Ignorance really is bliss – had I known what I know now about this industry, I probably would not have taken that first step. But I had a passion, and I felt a need. I knew that there were incredibly talented and hardworking singers, who deserved to have someone advocating for them who felt as passionate about their work as they did. And as I was encouraging them, some pretty wonderful people encouraged and believed in me. So, with a handful of adventuresome, risk taking artists, ADA was born. I am forever grateful to them all for trusting in me, and for challenging me to be the best that I can be. It is an honor to see their careers flourish, as they develop into incredible individuals whose artistry is informed by all that they are and do, and to celebrate with them as they realize their full potential on stages throughout the world. I am continually inspired by the fresh talent that is always waiting to be discovered. These young people who desire to speak through their art rekindle my own fire. I love what I do, from watching budding talents get their first professional job or international debut, to seeing seasoned artists continue to grow, exploring new repertoire and direction. I strive always to provide the kind of representation I would have wanted as a singer. This is a relationship built on trust, one that requires truth and deep commitment. That my clients place that trust in me is humbling beyond words. The last several years have brought difficult challenges to our industry. We have seen beloved institutions close their doors, have witnessed the financial battles surviving companies face, as well as their struggle to stay artistically relevant. And I am again inspired. All around me I see singers, conductors, and directors digging and finding new depth within themselves to share unabashedly with their fellow artists and their audience. I see producing companies showcasing works of importance that speak to the human condition and providing their communities with more than beautifully realized presentations – providing them with a shared human experience. The bravery is astounding. The common denominator which unites us all - singer, director, administrator, crew member, manager- is this passion, this desire to make a difference in our own community, and in the world-wide community. Sometimes is it hard to believe, because the path can be so difficult, but what we do does matter. Following your heart pays off. I am so fortunate to have been surrounded early on with amazing supporters; Dorothy Byrne for giving me the push I needed to make this happen, Jonathan Pell for introducing me, mentoring me and including me, Nick Russell, my opera husband, and Floyd Anderson and Dale Johnson at Minnesota Opera, my opera dads. Last but not least, my ADA partner in crime, Shawn Marie Jeffery, you are the best teammate and friend one can ask for. I couldn’t do this without you. With one step an adventure began and today ADA artists can be seen on operatic and concert stages throughout the world - from New York to Chicago, to Milan, Berlin, Zurich, London and Hong Kong among many others - bringing their artistry to venues large and small, and always with commitment and passion. Heres sending heartfelt gratitude to every one of you for the places we’ve been – and tremendous excitement to see what lies ahead! CELEBRATION!! Today is our day. We’re off to great places. We’re off and away! Ana See the full newsletter:
