ADAM’S UNBELIEVABLY EXCITING COUNTDOWN OF HIS FAVOURITE RECORDS OF 2014! 1. Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues I’m not sure if there was ever a doubt in my mind that this record was going to be my pick to top this list. Transgender Dysphoria Blues is a record that I started listening to in January and last listened to on my drive home this afternoon. It’s a record that’s full of energy and showcases the band at full strength with their best lineup to date. That said, I feel like this album would still hold its spot atop this list even if it was a Laura Jane Grace solo record with just her and an acoustic guitar. That’s because the songs on this record are knock-outs. If you’re a fan of Against Me! you already know the history of this record, if you don’t, here’s a crash course: Laura Jane Grace was born Tom Gabel. She struggled with gender dysphoria until she made the decision to transition. As you can imagine, these songs deal with Laura’s struggles surrounding her dysphoria, but also feel universal. These are songs for anyone who has ever felt out of place; for anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable in their own skin. All go which culminate in Black Me Out, the album closer and easily my own personal anthem of 2014. I don’t ever wanna talk like that again. I don’t wanna know people like that anymore. As if there was an obligation. As if I owe you something. Black me out.” Transgender Dysphoria Blues is an incredibly important record. A love letter to who you are, whoever you are. A record that reminds you that you can be different, and you don’t have to hide, and that you don’t have to be afraid. There are people out there like you, there are allies out there for you, and there’s music out there that you can relate to while you sing it. 2014 was an amazing year for music. There were good records; there were great records, but there was only one record that mattered. That record was Transgender Dysphoria Blues.
