ADHD- Real or not? I could write a book on this subject.. because its so close to my heart. I used to think kids that had ADHA or ADD were just not disciplined. I didnt think it was real.Then I started seeing signs.. My daughters kindergarten teacher called her her wonderer. Alana would just disappear on her. We thought it was funny, because that was Alana (always in her own world). Then, my daughters 1st grade teacher talked to me about ADHD, because Alana always was on the move, talking, fighting, zero concentration, not hitting her bench marks for her grade, and lunch time detention was a normal for Alana, she really didnt care. I took her for a psych evaluation given by one of the very few people certified by the state to test for ADD & ADHD, Dr. Finch. She had a 7 page diagnosis for extreme hyperactivity ADHD & ADD. I still wouldnt medicate her. We did a year of behavioral therapy and still, she couldnt hit her bench marks etc. I decided this was hurting her education more so than anything and we started her on the trail of medication.. We went through acouple different medicines before Concerta clicked (and still doing therapy). By this time, its nearing the end of second grade and her learning level was way below everyone elses. She hated going to school because she felt dumb. It broke my heart to hear her beat herself up because she didnt understand what was going on. She is so intelligent in so many ways, way beyond her years.. but not when it came down to what matters..concentration and tests in school. Well, thanks to medication and her drs guidance AND continuing therapy. . Shes ADVANCED! We just got her PSSA results in the mail. Is ADHD & ADD REAL? YESSSS!!! Please dont deny your child the education that he or she deserves, just because you dont believe its a real medical disorder. Alana is living proof that it is real!!
